The loss of any member of the 81st Entry diminishes us all.

The 81st Entry extends its sympathy and condolences to the family and friends of two more of our esteemed colleagues: Ben Harris, who passed away on 20 April 2018, belated details of which were passed to you all by email on 6 June, and Eric Francis Stone who passed away on 4 May 2018.

Eric's funeral took place at the North Devon Crematorium in Barnstaple on Friday 18th May. I drove down from Wiltshire on the day and met up with John Mackenzie at Barnstaple railway station where he and I then waited for Mike Stanley who had travelled down by rail from Cardiff. After coffee nearby we three then made our way to the crematorium where we met Jim Pinn along with Russ Russell, Bill Morley and their wives - sadly Frank Chammings, who intended to be there, had been unable to make it.

It was a fine spring day and the crematorium was packed with family and friends who gave Eric a really nice send off. Much was said about his bravely fighting the terrible disease of MND for so many years and that, at last, his suffering had come to an end. I think the whole ethos of the Service was summed up by the reading of the poem, following this account, which says everything that I would love to have been able to write myself.

After the funeral Service a goodly proportion of those of us at the crematorium repaired to the Muddiford Inn to join Avril and her family for drinks and refreshments. We were made very welcome and I know, from what Avril told me, that the presence of so many of us from the 81st was very much appreciated. I left the pub earlier than I would have liked - there was so much to chat about - but, with a long drive ahead of me and the need to get home to my wife, who wasn't very well, discretion won any argument I might have had with myself.
