The Journal of the 81st Entry

Edited and uploaded by Brian Spurway

Welcome to the 62nd edition of The Journal.

The loss of any member of the 81st Entry diminishes us all.

The 81st Entry extends its sympathy and condolences to the family and friends of Alan Brownbill who passed away in June 2019.

We also extend our sympathy and condolences to the family and friends of Jack Squires who passed away on 22 December 2019.

Jack's funeral was held at Mortlake on Friday 15 January. Some of us, I'm sure, will have viewed the procedings through the Webcast that Greg, Jack's son, arranged; he also managed to arrange for a retired RAF Padre to conduct the ceremony. Tony Taylor and Peter Perry were able to attend and afterwards Tony sent me this message:

"This is to let you know that Peter, Brian and myself attended Jack's funeral yesterday. If you remember, Brian Baker was 87th but he served twice with Jack. I had joined a walking group in Abingdon and talking to one bloke I found he was ex 87th and somehow Jack's name came up. He was instrumental in locating Jack's whereabouts and the rest is history.

It was very good of Peter to attend coming from Tunbridge Wells as he did not know Jack except that he was 81st. The power of the Brat Brotherhood I guess.

We met members of his family and I think they were pleased to have our attendance.

I also received this message from Greg after his father's funeral:

"Hello Brian,

Thanks for your kind words, and thanks for your support in acting as a very efficient conduit to those who remembered dad. It was fantastic some could attend. I enjoyed the verbatim accounts you facilitated and they really helped inform my Tribute. I appreciated the feedback on a shortlist of pipe tunes and the speed in which it arrived too.

It was important to me that he had a good send-off, and he did. Thanks again for being no small part in making that happen."
